Supporting nurses through the Christmas season

As the year draws to a close and the holiday season approaches, many of us look forward to a slower pace, time with loved ones, and a chance to recharge.

But in healthcare, Christmas often brings the opposite.

For nurses, the holiday period is one of the most demanding times of the year. Staffing levels are strained by vacations, temporary staff step in, illness rates rise, and at the same time, patients still need accessible, safe and compassionate care. The pressure is real – and it is felt every day on the front lines.

At Aurora Innovation, this reality is never far from our minds.

Digital solutions should not add to the stress

Recent research highlights what many nurses already know. Digital healthcare solutions can improve accessibility for patients – but they can also increase strain for the healthcare staff when systems are fragmented and workflows are unclear.

A new Swedish study by Magdalena Ramstedt Stadin and Åsa Cajander, based on interviews with 29 nurses working with 1177 Direkt, paints a nuanced picture of today’s digital work environment. Nurses describe:

Increased cognitive load from parallel communication channels

Fragmented patient interactions that reduce continuity

Unclear processes that create unnecessary stress

This echoes findings from the study “Den dumma digitaliseringen” (The Dumb Digitalization), published by the Swedish Association of Health Professionals, which highlighted that nurses may have to manage up to 30 different IT systems daily.

Healthcare professionals have to handle overly complex digitalization — leading to more administration and less time for patients. This becomes especially apparent during already demanding periods like Christmas. So how can we help?

Peace of mind during the holidays

At Aurora Innovation, we work closely with healthcare professionals to ensure that our solutions reflect real needs and help them in their everyday life.

By structuring patient communication, reducing constant interruptions, and giving nurses greater control over when and how they respond, Aurora teleQ helps create a more sustainable and calmer work environment – even during peak periods.

Working closely with healthcare professionals and developing digital solutions that genuinely support their daily work has a measurable impact on stress levels. This is clearly reflected in how Aurora teleQ is used by our customers across Europe.

In Sweden, Region Västerbotten standardized the use of Aurora teleQ across the entire region, improving communication between patients and healthcare services while creating a more predictable and less stressful workday for staff. In Finland, healthcare provider Mehiläinen experienced shorter response times and a calmer workflow, leading to an improved care experience for both patients and professionals.

Similar effects can be seen in the Netherlands, where Cindy Hurkmans, a doctor’s assistant working across several primary care centres, describes how Aurora teleQ has made a noticeable difference in her work environment. By allowing patients to choose when they want to be called back, stress levels in clinics are reduced and patient satisfaction increases.

New year – new opportunities

As we are coming to a new year, we continue working towards our goal: enabling smart healthcare access for everyone. With digital solutions designed around their users, we will continue to support healthcare professionals, reduce their administrative burden, and ease their workload. And at the same time give them more time for their patients.

So everyone gets the care they need, no matter what time of the year it is.

A big thank you to all the nurses working this season. You are true heroes, and we are proud to support your work in every way we can.

Happy Holidays to all of you,
The Aurora Innovation team
