Master’s Thesis: Inclusive Digital Healthcare Services for People with Deafblindness

Help Develop More Inclusive Digital Healthcare

As healthcare becomes increasingly digital, a growing number of interactions with healthcare providers take place through digital channels. For people with deafblindness, this development can create new barriers even when services formally comply with accessibility requirements. In this master’s thesis project, you will investigate how digital healthcare services can be made more accessible and inclusive.

The Challenge

  • Digital healthcare pathways can create specific barriers for people with combined vision and hearing loss
  • General accessibility requirements do not always address the target group’s individual communication needs
  • There is a gap between formal legal compliance and accessibility as actually experienced by users

Objectives of the Master’s Thesis

  • Map barriers in current digital healthcare pathways for people with deafblindness
  • Analyse relevant accessibility requirements, including WCAG, EN 301 549, the Swedish Act concerning the Accessibility of Digital Public Services, and the European Accessibility Act
  • Conduct policy analysis, expert interviews, and user-centred service design analysis
  • Develop design guidelines, a gap analysis, or a prototype concept for more inclusive digital healthcare services

Who Are We Looking For?

  • A student in a relevant field, such as service design, interaction design, accessibility, digitalisation, or a related discipline
  • An interest in inclusive design, digital healthcare, and user-centred development
  • An interest in policy analysis, interviews, and qualitative methods
  • The ability to plan accessible methods for engaging with the target group

Your assignment: Investigate how the digitalisation of healthcare access affects the ability of people with deafblindness to seek and obtain care. The outcome should provide concrete design guidelines, a gap analysis, or a prototype concept for more inclusive digital healthcare services.
